Helping Youth Heal, Grow, And Choose Hope

Supporting families and young people impacted by gun violence through mentorship, healing, education, and community support in Coahoma County.

Healing Begins With Community

A Journey In Our Shoes Foundation supports youth and families impacted by gun violence in Coahoma County through mentorship, emotional support, education, and safe spaces where healing can begin.

Founded by parents who lost their three sons, Dayeveon, Artis, and David, the foundation was built from lived experience, compassion, and a commitment to helping young people choose hope over violence.

Materials for Learning

Many educational materials in local languages are often out of date. We work with school leaders and publishers to ensure that students have access to current textbooks that are age appropriate and written in their primary language.

Enrichment & Exposure Trips

Youth are provided opportunities to broaden their experiences and envision new possibilities through:

  • College tours

  • Museum and cultural trips

  • Career exploration visits

  • Outdoor and recreational activities

  • Sporting events

  • Leadership conferences

  • Educational trips outside the Mississippi Delta

These experiences expose participants to new environments, careers, cultures, and opportunities beyond their daily surroundings.

Support for Communities

Education happens within the context of a larger community. Our approach extends beyond the school to help ensure students have the necessary support to do their best learning.

“We know what violence takes from a family. That is why we are committed to helping young people choose something different for their future.”
